Development Council for Bishnupriya Manipuris Formed

GUWAHATI, March 25 – State Government today announced in the Legislative Assembly that a Ministerial committee would be formed to study the issue of more autonomy to Karbi Anglong district. Besides, it announced formation of three development councils for the Maimals, Naths and Bishnupriya Manipuris of the State.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who made the announcement on behalf of the Government said that the Chief Minister decided to form the committee following a representation made yesterday by a delegation of the militant group United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), which is on ceasefire now.

The militant group had urged for steps to create a state within the State with financial support in line with Mizoram etc states, creation of more districts within Karbi Anglong and more autonomy to the village councils, among others.

The Ministerial committee would consult all the stake holders and would send its recommendations to the Central Government for further actions, within the next two months, said the Minister.

The Mini-ster also announced that the State Government, in the wake of the several representations made by the Maimals (Muslim Fishermen), Naths and Bishnupriya Manipuris, had ‘agreed on principle’ to form three separate development councils for the socio-economic development of the said communities.

The details of the councils would be worked out within the next two months’ time, said the Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
